Expert energy analysis and insight for UK businesses.
This year Monday 29th July marks Earth Overshoot Day, the day when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. We maintain this deficit by liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Each year the date inches forwards as we continue to demand more and more of the earth’s finite materials.
The date is calculated by the Global Footprint Network, an international research organisation that provides decision-makers with a menu of tools to help the human economy operate within Earth’s ecological limits. And, with 60% of our eco footprint consisting of carbon, energy is highlighted as one of 5 key areas where business and organisations can make a big difference, alongside cities, food, planet and population. [1]
Energy offers a wealth of exciting innovation as we move to an increasingly mixed range of energy sources and technology. Through renewables, flexibility, low carbon and storage, energy has evolved to the circular rather than linear model- consumed, stored, reused and traded back and forth as opposed to simply produced, consumed and wasted. Reliance on fossil fuels is dwindling and the increased commitment to electrification is making the system cleaner, greener and smarter as we endeavour to hit our Paris Climate targets and solve the climate crisis.
While our planet’s resources are finite, human endeavour and possibilities are not. The pocket sized communications device you use to access the world was unheard of twenty five years ago, before mobile tech would undergo a seismic shift to become the gateway to the world’s collective knowledge. Equally, there’s technology on the horizon that we haven’t even dreamed off yet that might just mean we achieve success in reversing the catastrophic effects of climate change. But this can often feel unobtainable or intangible in practical business terms. How do you get there?
There are in fact 3 practical steps you can make today to reduce your carbon footprint, go circular with your energy whilst driving revenue from your energy management. How? Through flexible energy management:
