The ECO4 scheme is here to help you save money and improve your home

Eligible customers living in a home with a low EPC rating will be offered a package of free energy-saving measures and heating improvements. The ECO4 scheme is not a way to only replace or upgrade your boiler

We’re aware of an issue affecting the ECO4 application process

The issue has been fixed but applications made from May 8th onwards may not have been captured. If you haven't received an email confirmation you'll need to recomplete your application. We're sorry for the delay in dealing with your application.

What is the ECO4 Scheme?

ECO4 is the fourth phase of the Government’s Energy Company Obligation. It started in August 2022 and it's due to continue until 31 March 2026.

The ECO4 Scheme aims to provide free energy-saving measures for vulnerable households to improve the efficiency and heating of their home.

Stop heat in your home escaping

Did you know that a typical home without insulation can lose 33% of its heat through its walls and 25% through the roof?

Insulating your home properly can improve keeping the heat in and reduce heat loss.

Well-insulated homes are much better for your health too. There is no question that living in a cold home can cause health issues, and heighten pre-existing ones. Insulating your home to the latest guidance also means that you can prevent damp, which can cause mould and mildew.

Adding insulation to your loft, walls and floor will help you keep your home warm, wasting less energy and lowering your home's carbon emissions.

Upgrade your electric heating system

Upgrading your existing electric heating system with a more energy-efficient solution or adding a zero carbon heating system like an air source heat pump will keep you warm and save the planet.

Electric heater designs have come a long way. New models of storage heaters and electric radiators include energy efficiency features such as;

  • Smart controls help you only heat the rooms you want
  • A highly accurate thermostat, 7-day times for 24-hour control
  • Energy-saving technologies such as 'open window detection' and 'adaptive start'

Upgrade your boiler

The scheme requires that the fabric of a property (walls, floors and roofs) are considered before replacing a heating system. Upgrading your old boiler with a more efficient model will help make your home more energy efficient. Boilers, like other domestic appliances, have efficiency ratings of A-G. Modern boilers have to be A-rated and show it in their literature.

FAQs about the ECO4 Scheme

Why can't I just get a replacement gas boiler?

The ECO scheme has been designed by the government to improve the most energy-inefficient properties. The scheme requires that the fabric of a property (walls, floors and roofs) are considered before replacing a heating system.

If all insulation work has been done, it may be possible to upgrade your heating system, but further scheme restrictions may apply.

An upgrade would typically be;

  • Upgrading from electric room heaters  to an efficient air source heat pump

  • Upgrading from inefficient electric storage heaters to an efficient air source heat pump

  • Upgrading from a non-condensing gas boiler to an efficient A-rated combi boiler

What if I don't want all the measures that the installer says I need to have?

In order to be eligible for the ECO scheme, your property must meet the minimum EPC band improvement. The measures identified by the installer will meet this requirement and must be installed to be eligible for the scheme.

How do I find out if I have an EPC and what the rating is?

Can I receive the ECO grant and choose my installer?

The ECO scheme is not a grant scheme. Payments are made directly to the installer based on the work completed in your home. EDF only uses installers that meet the accreditation requirements set by the government.

This means that all the work carried out will be to a high standard, making sure the improvements help you make your home more efficient for the long term.

Why do I need to have ventilation measures installed in my property?

When insulating a property it's important to have adequate airflow throughout the property, therefore it may be required to install ventilation measures.

I've not heard from the installer since submitting my ECO application. Who do I contact?

Your allocated installer should be in touch with you within 5 working days from submitting your application. You can find who your installer is in the email that is sent to you if your application is successful.
