What is a smart Pay As You Go meter and how does it work?

A smart Pay As You Go meter is a type of smart meter that comes with a handy in-home display or an IHD for short.

You'll be able to see how much energy you're using in pounds and pence and top up online, set budgets and more.

You can upgrade to a smart Pay As You Go meter if you have a prepayment meter.

Why get a smart Pay As You Go meter?

There are three reasons to get a top up smart meter:

Top up whenever you need to and set up auto-top ups to make sure you never run out credit.

2. Low balance alerts

Set up alerts so that when your balance drops to £5 you'll get a text or email reminder to top up.

How can I top up my smart Pay As You Go meter?

The quickest and easiest way to top up is with our free mobile app. With the app you can:

  • Check your balance
  • Set low balance alerts
  • Set up auto top-ups
  • View your top-up history

You can also top up calling our automated phone number 0333 009 7111(1) or in a shop with a PayPoint symbol. Find a PayPoint shop near you.

Who can get a smart Pay As You Go meter?

You'll be able to get a smart Pay As You Go meter installed if you have a prepayment meter and our installers are in your area.
 

How can I set up automatic top-ups?

You can choose when you want to top up your meter and by how much. We’ll take the payments automatically from your chosen debit or credit card. Set up auto top-ups in MyAccount.

Can I get reminders to top up?

You can get text or email reminders to top up by setting up low balance alerts at £5, or another amount you choose. Set up low balance alerts in MyAccount.
 

What if I run out of credit or can't top up?

How to get a smart Pay As You Go meter

Enjoy all the benefits of a smart Pay As You Go meter in three easy steps.

Step 1: Book an appointment

Log into MyAccount to book your smart meter installation on a date and time that suits you best. If you can't find the appointment you want, simply try again the next day.

Step 2: Have your smart meter installed

On the day of your installation appointment our installer will arrive and replace your old meters with a new smart meter. This takes about an hour for each meter.

Step 3: Get to know your in-home display

Our installer will leave you with a user guide. It'll explain how your smart meter and in-home display work.

The engineer will need to come into your home to complete safety checks, even if your meter is outside.

If anyone in your home develops coronavirus symptoms before, or on the day of the appointment, please reschedule for a later date.
