What is the Energy Price Guarantee?

The government introduced the Energy Price Guarantee in response to the high energy prices in 2022. While the guarantee limits what you're charged for your gas or electricity, your bill will still reflect how much energy you use. Anyone who qualified for the discount had the discount automatically applied to their bills between October 2022 and 30 June 2023.

From 1 July 2023, only customers with prepayment and smart Pay As You Go meters will qualify for any Energy Price Guarantee discount on their energy bills. This is because the latest Ofgem price cap rate is lower than the Energy Price Guarantee level. Any discount will be automatically applied. Please use our table below as a guide to what's happening.

The Energy Price Guarantee will remain in effect until the end of March 2024 if the price cap goes above £3,000 per year.

How will the Energy Price Guarantee affect me?

From 1 October 2023, customers with prepayment or smart PAYG meters on variable or fixed tariffs will receive the Energy Price Guarantee discount, which means these customers will not pay more than Direct Debit customers. We're contacting customers affected by these changes to inform them of the situation.

Customers who pay by cash, cheque, or Direct Debit will not receive any EPG discount. This is because the prices under Ofgem's price cap are lower than the government's EPG.

You'll pay the latest Ofgem price cap rates until 31 December 2023 but will still get the EPG discount.

This ensures that you won't pay more than customers who pay by Direct Debit. The discount will now be applied to your electricity and gas standing charges rather than the unit rates as it was before. You don't have to worry about missing out on this discount, as it's applied automatically.

FixedSmart PAYGYou'll pay your fixed rates until your tariff ends but will still get the EPG discount.
